Fashion’ s elite came out in full force to celebrate the re-opening of Chanel’ s Soho boutique hosted by Karl Lagerfeld on Thursday evening. The newly renovated boutique was insanely fabulous with a 10 foot bottle of the iconic Chanel No. 5 perfume bottle, mirrored ceilings and wall to wall Chanel bags in every size, shape and skin imaginable at the exclusive Bag Bar! Karl was on hand to hob nob with the star studded crowd and later hosted a private dinner (yours truly was lucky enough to attend! ) at the Chanel Soho Club.

We noshed on fresh oysters, lobster rolls, veggie tarts and truffle french fries and ended the night with chocolate lollipops, mini ice cream cones, macaroons and mojito jello shots! DJ Baptiste Giabiconi got the crowd on its feet while the Kaiser stood and watched us dance. I had never seen so many supermodels and A-list stars under one roof! SJP, Diane Kruger, Alexa Chung, Erin Wasson, Molly Sims and many many others. I have to say, Chanel knows how to throw a party! You must go to the Soho boutique to see the Chanel Bag Bar for yourself! Address: 98 Wooster.

One of the more interesting bag shapes to emerge at Tuesday’ s Chanel handbags show was the Chanel classic 2. 55 quilted bag minus the iconic leather/metal chain strap; in its place was an extra piece of quilted leather that rolled up, as pictured here, like the top of a brown paper sandwich bag.

Inventive, no? Karl Lagerfeld is the master of reinventing the wheel. Aside from that touch of inventiveness, the rest of the bags presented at the show were pretty standard fare for Chanel Bags. Yes, the prints and colors were changed to go with the spring season’ s theme, but overall they were pretty predictable.

One of the clutches– suede with leather sides and gold-embossed shell– was cute as it resembled a chic Chanel Purses book. Overall, the bags emphasized the notion of handheld; the idea that, even with a strap, a woman should still be able to grasp it quickly in her palm.

I am attending the Chanel cocktail party and a dinner with the Kaiser himself tonight– you all know how I feel about Chanel so you can imagine how excited I am right now. I’ ve had a very long love affair with Chanel handbags. In college, I carried my jumbo black lambskin Chanel classic flap bag to class– it fit a notepad, a change of clothes (Kelly & I spent the night at each other’ s apartments a lot, she was always amazed how much clothes I could fit in my Chanel) and all of my cosmetic essentials.

It was my very first Chanel bags and it’ s been lovingly used for so long that the lambskin is now distressed (it is so much more fun to distress a bag than to buy one done for you! ). Since then I’ ve amassed dozens of Chanel bags and each carries with it special memories that no photo album nor journal can capture. The allure of the Chanel bag is as much in the selection of one as it is in owning one. When I look for a new Chanel, it is done with careful thought and consideration. I never ask friends for opinions because a Chanel purchase is so special, no matter if it’ s your first or 50th, it should be a very personal decision.

For the Soho Boutique Exclusive bags, I’ m aching for the red python (above). Red is such a powerful color and done in python, it’ s a major statement but the tassles give it a playfulness that is very me. The chanel bag also comes in gray or brown python. $4, 900 at Chanel boutique in Soho.

Tell me that if the Chanel Woven Fabric Shopping Tote Bag, that Rachel Bilson is toting around didn’ t have the Chanel bags? logo and chain you’ d still think it cost more than $100 and I wouldn’ t believe you!

The Spring Summer 2010 collection had a lot to offer – including some gorgeous takes on the classic 2. 55 (particularly the over-sized messengers) – but I just cannot find anything appealing in these dowdy patch-like flowers.

The bag shape itself is nice and the interlaced chain and over-sized signature Chanel handbags logo are chic Chanel bags? seems to be the only brand that can pull off those in your face logos without being overly obnoxious and I love that the logo here is done in metal and fabric, but why these patterned black flowers?

With all the high-class breeding of a pedigree pooch comes Chanel’ s Sharpei Tote Bag.

The canine inspired moniker comes from the purse’ s wrinkled sides. This ruched detail combines with the buttery soft lambskin to create a slouchy, relaxed style. It’ s soft and feminine, but I’ m still not entirely convinced. It looks like the purse could easily collapse in an unsightly puddle of? leather once it’ s set down. I think I’ d have to test drive this one to decide whether it’ s got enough structure to impress.

The shoulder straps haven’ t helped to sway me. That silver really pops against the black leather, but anyone who’ s ever carried such chunky chains knows they’ re not comfortable. The leather plaiting will do nothing to cushion your shoulders when using this as an everyday carryall. These straps, and the extra chain near the bottom of the bag, are also bound to make an already big purse even heavier.

But Chanel handbags fans know they sometimes have to suffer a little for those designer looks. At least the design is practical, with a zippered pocket, two open pouches for gadgets, and a leash keychain inside. With its $3350 price tag though, I’ m still not sure there’ s enough positives here to win casual Chanel fans like me over.

The Chanel Paris Biarritz looks really practical and the fact that it is not leather probably makes it lighter to carry and water-resistant. This elegant, sophisticated bag is enough to inspire a trip around the world. silvertone hardware, a ‘CC’ logo charm and unique adjustable handles. The zip top opens to a balck lining, zip pocket, cell phone and open compartments. Size: 14″ x 11″ x 6″ (W35 x H30 x D17CM) Sale Price : US $213.00.

Personally speaking, I am not as crazy about the Paris Biarritz collection of hobos and shopper totes in coated canvas. They’re expensive and look like camera bags (as my friend’s daughter and husband so eloquently put it when she brought one home in gold) I’m not surprised they’re sold out though, people will buy just about anything if you stick a Chanel logo on it.
